During the century the town has become an important port with an impressive fleet of fishermen boats. Marsala is also very famous for its sweet wine, Marsala, the most famous producer is Florio. The entrepreneur Vincenzo Florio bought a vast land in 1833 and his name wine became the most renowed. It is said that the English trader John Woodhouse was the one who discovered this fortified wine when he arrived in Marsala in 1773. Marsala is similar to Port, it ages in wooden casks. Close to Marsala visitors will have the opportunity to discover its salt flats, the ancient Selinunte, the natural reserve of Zingaro, the Medieval Salemi, Sciacca and Trapani, where ferries to Egadi Islands depart from.
